What to Know if Your Child Needs a Palate Expander
Posted on 9/21/2020 by Aron Geelan, DMD
Depending on how your child's palate is developing as he or she grows, we may suggest that you use a palate expander in some cases. A palate expander is simply an orthodontic device that guides the development of the palate. It is most frequently seen in situations where the child's palate is too narrow and the teeth are at risk of suffering damage or misalignment if the matter is not corrected. If we tell you that your child should be using a palate expander, here is what you need to know.
The Best Time to Use a Palate Expander
Typically, your child should use the device between the ages of 5 and 16. This is certainly not to say that he or she will use the device for 11 years, rather, the use should take place at some point within this window.
Benefits of a Palate Expander
Aside from the cosmetic benefits that your child will derive, there are other reasons that we suggest our patients use a palate expander. For one thing, a properly developed palate will make it easier for your child to breathe correctly. This is especially important if there is some other issue such as asthma at play. By expanding the palate properly, we can maximize the flow of air and help your child get all the oxygen he or she needs.
Another benefit of a palate expander is that it can head off potential problems down the road. By making sure your child's palate is properly formed now, we can decrease the chance that he or she will need orthodontic devices such as braces or a retainer later on.
If you have any questions about your child's development, please feel free to pick up the phone and give us a call. Or, jot your questions down and ask at your next appointment. We are here to help!
