Complete Dentures
Portland OR

If you are missing all of your teeth, it may help you to know that it is relatively common, affecting over 40 million Americans. Especially for many older patients, having dentures can be a natural part of the aging process. There can be many factors that may cause a person to lose all of their teeth, such as progressive dental disease or infections, but it does not mean you do not deserve a bright and dazzling smile. Geelan Dental Care wants to ensure you can find a good fit when it comes to your prosthetic teeth.

Benefits of Having Dentures

For the edentulous, there is nothing less satisfying than craving a crispy apple and having to settle for a spoonful of applesauce. Because being toothless can mean a diet of soft food, it can be very disappointing to be presented with a tender steak and not having a way to bite into it. Also, toothlessness can make people feel very insecure about their appearance. Not having teeth can cause sagging in the face and jawline, which, unfortunately, can make you look much older than you really are.

A complete set of dentures means that your top and bottom jaw both have a full plate of artificial teeth. In the past, it was more difficult to get a good imprint for a more secure fit. These days, thanks to modern technology, we can use molds to create a replica of your mouth. Using 3D imaging, we can create a denture that is less likely to slip because it is designed based off of the exact shape of your gums. This means not only should you be able to speak clearly because they have a better fit, but also you should be able to enjoy many of your favorite foods again.

Caring for Your Teeth

To keep your smile looking its best, ensure proper care with your dentures so that they do not get stains or build-up. After you eat, rinse them well to remove food particles. Be careful handling your dentures. It may be a good idea to put a towel in the sink in case you do drop them, which may ensure they are less likely to break. Brush your dentures at least once a day, usually at night, because often artificial teeth need to stay wet to maintain their shape. You may need to soak them at night in a cleansing solution specially made for dentures. Make sure you rinse off any chemicals, however, as they can be very dangerous if you swallow them.

If you have a loose fit on your dentures, we may need to resize them so be sure to let us know. Loose dentures can rub against your tender gums and may cause irritation or even infection. It is still important to take care of your mouth, even if the teeth are no longer real, so ensure regular checkups for optimal dental care.

Through the use of a set of complete dentures, Geelan Dental Care hopes to be able to restore your smile and help you to enjoy many of the foods you used to love.
