Bruxism, or teeth grinding, is a dental nuisance that can subtly affect a patient’s life. Patients may find that they have frequent headaches or a constantly sore jaw. Chronic grinding can result in fracturing, loosening, or loss of teeth. These are often symptoms of bruxism while sleeping, which fairly enough patients are often unaware of. If you have similar symptoms, you may need a nightguard. A nightguard is a simple dental device that prevents the teeth from rubbing across or clenching on each other, relaxing the jaw muscle and hopefully preventing headaches and tooth damage for patients.
Tips to avoid teeth grinding:
• Avoid or cut back on foods that contain caffeine
• Avoid alcohol
• Avoid chewing gum- it allows your jaw muscles to get used to clenching
• Relax your jaw at night by holding a warm washcloth against your cheek in front of your earlobe
